🔬 Tax Modeling Methodology

To deliver accurate paycheck estimates, MyPaycheckCal simulates the exact sequence of deductions performed by employer payroll departments:

1. Gross Pay Standardization

Your compensation is converted to period gross wages according to your pay frequency (Weekly [52], Bi-Weekly [26], Semi-Monthly [24], or Monthly [12]). For hourly workers, overtime hours are modeled at the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) statutory rate of 1.5× your base hourly wage.

2. Pre-Tax Deduction Accounting

Eligible voluntary deductions — including traditional 401(k) contributions, Health Savings Accounts (HSA), Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), and qualified health/dental/vision insurance premiums — are subtracted from gross earnings prior to calculating income taxes, lowering your taxable income base.

3. Federal Income Tax Withholding

Withholding is calculated using the IRS Percentage Method as detailed in IRS Publication 15-T (Federal Income Tax Withholding Methods). The calculation accounts for standard deduction allowances adjusted for 2026 inflation ($16,100 for Single filers; $32,200 for Married Filing Jointly) and applies the seven progressive federal tax brackets (10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%).

4. Mandatory FICA Payroll Taxes

Social Security tax is computed at 6.2% up to the official annual wage base limit ($184,500 for 2026). Medicare tax is computed at 1.45% on all earnings, with an Additional Medicare Tax of 0.9% applied to compensation exceeding $200,000 (Single) or $250,000 (Married Filing Jointly).

5. State & Local Tax Integration

State withholding is tailored to your jurisdiction: modeling 0% wage tax states (TX, FL, WA, NV, AK, SD, TN, WY), flat-tax states, and progressive-tier states. Specialized local levies — such as Maryland county piggyback taxes (2.25% to 3.20%) and New York City resident income taxes (3.078% to 3.876%) — are factored in where applicable.
